How a custom knee brace is made, from home

  1. Fill out a short intake form.
  2. Scan your leg at home in the BISHOP app with any iPhone that has Face ID (iPhone X or newer). No fitting appointment.
  3. We design your brace from the scan. You only pay after we approve your scan.
  4. Your brace is 3D-printed, finished by hand in Shreveport, Louisiana, and ships 1 to 4 days after you pay.

What "total contact" means

A standard brace touches your leg at a few straps and pads. A total contact brace is modeled to follow the contours of your leg along its length, which spreads pressure evenly and helps the brace stay in place instead of sliding down.

That matters because fit is the most common reason a brace fails. A brace that migrates down the leg stops lining up with the knee, stops controlling motion, and starts rubbing, and a brace that isn't comfortable ends up in a drawer.

Light, low-profile, and easy to care for

  • About 13 ounces. Less than a pound, so it's easy to wear all day.
  • Snug, low-profile fit. Because it's shaped to your leg, the brace sits close to the skin and can be worn under most clothes.
  • Easy to clean. The closed-cell foam liner doesn't soak up sweat. Wash it with warm, soapy water and let it air dry.

Who a custom knee brace is for

BISHOP braces are designed for knees that give way or feel unstable: after a ligament injury such as an ACL, MCL, or LCL tear, with a meniscus tear or a kneecap that slips, or with arthritis.

Custom fabrication helps most when the shape of your leg is the problem: larger or very lean thighs, a big difference between thigh and calf size, bowed or knock-kneed alignment, or a history of braces sliding down. If you've recently had knee surgery, check with your surgeon before switching braces.

A custom knee brace for athletes

Because it's shaped to your leg, the brace stays in place through cutting, jumping, and quick changes of direction. Athletes wear BISHOP braces for:

  • Soccer and basketball, where pivoting and landing put an unstable knee to the test.
  • Running, where a light brace that doesn't slide down matters mile after mile.
  • Snow skiing, with an optional ski modification (the lower cuff trimmed 1 inch to fit ski boots) at no extra charge.
  • Bull riding, where a brace has to stay put through hard, unpredictable movement.

The brace hasn't been extensively tested in collision sports such as football, hockey, rugby, or lacrosse. If you play one, talk with us before ordering.

What a custom knee brace costs

Custom braces from the major brace makers commonly sell for about $500 to $1,500 or more, often plus a fitting visit. The BISHOP brace is $299.99 per knee, plus shipping (usually $5 to $15 in the continental U.S.). Orders are self-pay; custom knee braces are generally an eligible HSA or FSA expense.

Warranty and fit guarantee

Every brace has a 3-year warranty against defects. If the fit isn't right, we'll troubleshoot it with you on a call, and if you're still not satisfied you can return it within 30 days of delivery.

Common questions

Do I need a prescription for a custom knee brace?
No. You can order a BISHOP brace directly without a prescription or referral. If you don't know what's causing your knee instability, an evaluation by a physician or physical therapist is still worthwhile.
Do I need to pick a size?
No. Your brace is modeled from the 3D scan of your leg, so there are no sizes to choose.
How long does a custom knee brace take?
BISHOP braces ship 1 to 4 days after payment, and you pay only after we approve your scan.
Is a custom knee brace better than an off-the-shelf brace?
Not always. If a well-fitted standard brace controls your symptoms and you'll wear it, it may be all you need. A custom brace makes the most sense when a standard brace won't fit or stay in place, or your knee still gives way while wearing one.
